Early Childhood Curriculum in Aotearoa
This assignment relates to the following Learning Outcome:
QQ 8: Use knowledge of philosophies, perspectives and contexts of early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand, including contemporary Māori and Pasifika education developments and implications for practice, to inform an emerging personal philosophy of practice
Task instructions:
Over the Diploma programme you will create a professional portfolio online that demonstrates your growth and learning over time. In your portfolio you will collate and store the evidence of your growth.
Setting up your e-portfolio.
On your e-portfolio you will create a ‘Collection’ and within that collection will create two pages-one page for the standard ‘Teaching’ and another separate page for your philosophy statements.
Philosophy Statement and reflection
Word count: Philosophy – 250 words, Reflection 750 words
Your philosophy statement is a way to make your identity as a teacher transparent to the learning community you work with. As you move through your studies you will discover that your ideas about teaching and learning evolve and develop. Each semester you will revise your philosophy statement, integrating new ideas and perhaps adapting previous ones.
You will upload your revised philosophy statement to the dedicated philosophy page within your e-portfolio. You will support this with a reflection that examines the beliefs and values that underpin your philosophy and the events or new learning that may have provoked new thinking. This reflection will be up to 750 words long and must integrate relevant literature.
E-portfolio – Word count – 500 words per scenario and explanation
Each semester, you will add scenarios from practice to add to your portfolio. These scenarios tell the story of your professional growth and developing knowledge and skills over time and must be supported with evidence.

Scenarios should be events that have caused you to reflect and refine your practice.
In your first semester you will select one scenario. You will need to provide two pieces of evidence to support that scenario.
