Section One: The Research Process LO2: 3 parts 1550 words
- Describe the importance of research in the nursing context and the key steps of the research process: note the questions below are prompts. (approx. 500 words)
- Discuss why research is important in nursing – e.g. critical thinking, professional development, advancement of the profession, evidenced based practice, (EBP), professional innovation, leadership, policy, improve patient care outcomes.
- Briefly describe the key steps of the research process.
- Identify the research question, problem, hypothesis – e.g. the PICO format is often used: Patient/Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome.
- Review the literature – e.g. why is a literature review important? How is this completed?
- Design the study – e.g. what type of methodology could be used? Qualitative, Quantitative, Mixed Methods, Ethical approval?
- Data collection – e.g. what type of data collection will be used? Data storage? (Ethics)
- Data Analysis – e.g. how will data be analysed? Implications, Limitations?
- Interpret and report findings – e.g. how will findings be shared?
- Applying research to practice – e.g. how will findings be applied?
- Describe a research proposal and the key components of a research proposal: note the questions below are prompts (approx. 750 words)
- What is a research proposal? – e.g. describe a research proposal and how this is different to the research process.
- Briefly describe the key components of a research proposal:
- Title – e.g. clearly states the topic or focus of the research.
- Introduction and background – e.g. what is the issue? Why is it an important topic?
- Research Question or Aim – e.g. what does the researcher want to find out? Hypothesis?
- Rationale – e.g. why is this research worth doing? How will it enhance or improve nursing practice?
- Methodology – e.g. how will the researcher carry out the research? What tools or methods will the researcher use?
- Data Analysis – g. how will the results be analysed?
- Read the article below, and evaluate how the research findings of this particular study can be applied to nursing practice (approx. 300 words).
