  1. There are 100 marks for this assignment, which is 25% of the final course grade.
  2. The word limit for this assignment is 2,500 words (+/-10%), excluding references, figures, tables, and appendices.
  3. Use Arial or Times New Roman font size 12 and 1.5 line spacing.
  4. Ensure you follow academic citation and referencing requirements, as failure to do so may invoke penalties. Use APA (7th). A reference list is required.
  5. You are also required to reference the use of any tools/software/applications. This includes using artificial intelligence (AI) to paraphrase or proofread, which requires a statement where applicable.
  6. Upon submission your assignment will be checked for copied materials as well as the use of AI (artificial intelligence), with penalties to be applied where appropriate and if not appropriately referenced.
  7. You may submit your assignment as a draft submission (Moodle/Turnitin) to check the similarity prior to making your final submission.
  8. Late submissions incur a 5% penalty (5 marks) for each 24-hour period up to 96 hours (after that time, your mark will be recorded as zero).
  9. An extension may be granted if, within the prescribed timeframe, you submit an ‘Assignment Extension Application’ form with supporting documentation (e.g., a medical certificate) to the Programme Administration Unit.

Learning Outcomes

As set out in your Course Outline, this assignment requires you to achieve:

LO2: Effectively correlates data to construct various graphs and select appropriate quantitative tools.

LO3: Demonstrates analytical skills for managerial decision-making by evaluating and interpreting business scenarios; and

LO4: Apply calculations using appropriate instruments to distinguish between using forecasting and regression tools.

Business Scenario

A New Zealand company is considering options for expansion. The management must decide between:

  • Further expansion within New Zealand; or
  • Establishing a new branch in another OECD country.

For this assignment, you are required to select one OECD country outside New Zealand (with the approval of your lecturer) and prepare a report that applies a quantitative analytical approach to support the company’s strategic decision. Your task is to provide evidence-based recommendations using real economic data and quantitative tools.

You will analyse the following economic indicators using quarterly data (2006 Q1 – 2025 Q3):

  • GDP – Gross Domestic Product per capita
  • BOP – Balance of Payments
  • UR – Unemployment Rates (Age: 15 years or over)
  • PROD – Productivity and Unit Labour Costs

1. Exploratory Data Analysis (20 marks)

In this task, you are required to conduct an exploratory analysis. This includes calculating and interpreting descriptive statistics for each indicator, and examining the relationships between GDP and each of the other three indicators

  • Start by calculating and interpreting key statistical measures for all four indicators to explore the trend, distribution shape, and stability of the data.
  • Construct relevant graphs to visually represent the relationship between GDP and each of the other three indicators.
  • Demonstrate how these economic relationships can inform the company’s understanding of business performance in the selected country.

2. Quantitative Relationship Analysis (20 marks)

This task involves a more analytical approach to the data. You will conduct a correlation analysis and a regression analysis involving all four economic indicators. In the regression analysis, GDP will be used as the dependent variable, and the remaining three indicators will serve as independent variables. Clearly explain the strength and nature of the relationships you find and highlight any statistically significant findings.

3a. GDP Forecasting (2025 Q4–2026 Q1) (20 marks)

Using the data for your selected country, apply appropriate forecasting models to generate forecasts for GDP, BOP, UR, and PROD for 2025 Q4–2026 Q1.

  • Present the forecasts clearly in tables and/or graphs.
  • Provide a detailed interpretation for GDP in the context of business decisionmaking, explaining what the results suggest about the country’s short-term economic outlook.
  • For the other three indicators (BOP, UR, PROD), provide a concise discussion of their potential implications.

3b. Forecasting vs Relationship Modelling (10 marks)

In this task, you are expected to distinguish between the forecasting technique applied in Task 3a and the relationship modelling approach used in Task 2.

  • Compare the two approaches in terms of purpose, methodology, and practical application, drawing explicitly on the results from your own calculations.
  • Critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of each approach in the context of business decision-making.
  • Support your arguments with at least two academic references (APA 7th edition).

4. Comparative Decision-Making (New Zealand vs Selected Country) (25 marks)

Compare the selected country’s economic indicators against those of New Zealand. Evaluate the feasibility of the expansion strategies by applying sound statistical reasoning. Your recommendation should be clearly articulated, using evidence from your analysis to support the proposed direction for business expansion.
