Production techniques that you might analyze include but are not limited to: narrative structure, script writing, delivery, interview technique, sound design, and editing. Often, these podcast techniques will overlap with each other. That’s fine, but remember to keep a narrow focus on your single feature so that you spend more time analyzing than summarizing. Remember that a strong rhetorical analysis involves these three steps:
- Describing, in detail, a production feature in specific moments.
- Analyzing, or interpreting, the effects of that production choice for potential audiences.
- Explaining the significance of these choices and their effects. In short, “So what? Why should we care?”
Organize your analysis in whatever way makes the most sense for your thesis. Some essays will be organized chronologically, tracking the evolution of a single feature and its effects over the course of the episode. Other essays will focus on a single important moment that a technique is foregrounded in the podcast and build the rest of the episode (and its analysis) around that moment.
If you quote specific words/phrases or if you refer to specific moments/sounds, be sure to cite the time stamp in parentheses so that your readers can easily find the moments that you refer to in your analysis. For example: When Abumrad exclaims, “What?” (2:08), his voice…
Be sure to conclude the essay by discussing the stakes of your argument. Why is that specific production technique and its effect(s) significant for its audiences? What are its larger cultural implications? Why should we care about it now?
