The ENCE5214 portfolio combines the legal rules of New Zealand cadastral surveying with practical traverse work. Part 1 tests the Cadastral Survey Rules 2021 (CSR 2021) and survey plan reading, Part 2 is a 12d Model case study on a two-lot subdivision at 40 Lagoon Place, and Part 3 compares key cadastral terms. Late work without an approved extension loses 5% per calendar day.

Part 1: Cadastral Survey Rules and Regulations (20 marks)

Question 1: Part 3 of the Cadastral Survey Rules 2021 (boundaries)

  • The boundary and boundary points that must be defined by survey. (2 marks)
  • The survey information that may be adopted in a cadastral survey. (2 marks)

Question 2: Part 4 (Permanent Reference Marks)

  • The points or marks on a cadastral survey that must be referenced by a PRM. (2 marks)
  • The rules for the number and distance of boundary points to PRMs. (2 marks)

Question 3: Part 7 (Cadastral Survey Datasets)

Detail all the information that must be provided in a survey report. (2 marks)

Question 4: Occupation Diagrams

A record of survey must include occupation diagrams. List all the information that forms an occupation diagram. (3 marks)

Question 5: Survey Plan DP 542303

  • Identify the plan symbols for the marks IS I DPS 74129, IT I DPS 7099 and AP 1 DP 340173. (1 mark each)
  • Draw lines showing the different line styles for an observed, an adopted and a calculated vector on a survey plan. (2 marks)
  • For this two-lot urban subdivision, comment on the good survey practice principles applied to the origin of bearings. (2 marks)

Part 2: Cadastral Survey Case Study, 40 Lagoon Place (70 marks)

  1. Using 12d Model, create a pre-calculation traverse spreadsheet with data from existing survey plans. For each block in the spreadsheet, describe what data was input and where it came from, and discuss the workflow for the order of blocks as a rationale for building the spreadsheet. Include screenshots of your three blocks and the traverse plan view with all marks labelled. (35 marks)
  2. After watching the “reductions and Landonline” video, summarise the approach of the final traverse spreadsheet prepared for export to Landonline, focusing on the workflow of the blocks and working from the whole to the part. You comment on the Licensed Cadastral Surveyor’s approach; you do not complete the spreadsheet in 12d for this part. (35 marks)

Part 3: Cadastral Surveying Terms (10 marks)

  • Compare and contrast limited as to parcels and limited titles. (5 marks)
  • Compare and contrast legalisation surveys and land transfer surveys. (5 marks)

Part 2 carries 70 of the 100 marks, so plan the 12d Model write-up first: explain each traverse block (the data input, the source plan such as the DP or Landonline record, and why that block comes next), label every mark on the plan view, and then describe how the final spreadsheet works from the whole to the part before export to Landonline. In Part 1, cite the exact rules of CSR 2021 (for example the PRM rules and their class distances), and in Part 3 compare the legal effect of each pair of terms, not just their definitions.
