This EIT postgraduate essay follows the course’s Assessment 1 annotated bibliography. Students choose a health topic, ideally from their own practice, and analyse how colonisation and the determinants of health shape outcomes for Māori in Aotearoa, then evaluate the Treaty of Waitangi principles set by the Waitangi Tribunal (2019) and what they mean for health policy and the health system.

Background to the Assessment

Where possible using your own health practice context, analyse the determinants of health and health outcomes for Māori in Aotearoa, and evaluate the five Treaty of Waitangi principles determined by the Waitangi Tribunal (2019) and their implications on the health system and health strategies related to Māori health.

Assessment Task

Read the essay requirements and the marking rubric carefully before you start. Do not use bullet points to list issues or explanations; sub-headings are optional.

Suggested format

Cover page: name of the course, assessment number, assessment title and student name.

Introduction: give the context of the topic areas and introduce the reader to the contents of the essay.

Main body: select a health topic and analyse and critique the following key areas:

  • The historical and current health status of all New Zealand populations.
  • Determinants of health and their impact on health outcomes, with clear evidence, including Māori and Pasifika health.
  • Health policies, strategies and/or plans related to your selected health topic.
  • A critical evaluation of how the Treaty of Waitangi principles, as defined by the Waitangi Tribunal (2019), are acknowledged and/or implemented within health policies, strategies and/or plans.
  • How Māori health outcomes align with the Treaty of Waitangi principles as defined by the Waitangi Tribunal (2019).
  • Current research that investigates health outcomes within your selected health topic.
  • Where able, Kaupapa Māori approaches and culturally safe practices for your selected health topic.
  • Evidence-based recommendations for the health policy, strategies and/or plans and the health system.

Conclusion: an overall conclusion that brings your findings together in relation to the topic.

References: APA 7th edition, with a reference list matching the in-text citations in each section.

Marking Criteria

The rubric grades the essay from A (80% and above) to fail on four criteria: research and knowledge base, synthesis and analysis of information, evidence of evaluation, and academic writing skills (cover sheet, logical flow, grammar and APA 7 referencing).

Submission Notes

  • Submit through the assessment dropbox on EIT Online; the work is checked for plagiarism under EIT’s academic honesty policy.
  • Generative AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot may be used to prompt ideas or guide thinking, but not to complete the assessment; any AI-generated content must be verified against the original source and cited, and all writing must be your own.

The MHSC8.002 colonisation essay rewards depth over coverage. Pick one health topic you know from practice, such as diabetes, mental health or maternal care, and trace a clear line from colonisation and land loss through the social determinants to today's Māori and Pasifika outcomes, using current New Zealand data rather than general statements. The Te Tiriti section is where many drafts lose marks: name each of the five Waitangi Tribunal (2019) principles, show where a real policy such as Pae Tū or the Māori health strategy meets or misses it, and finish with recommendations that follow from your evidence. Our nursing and health science assignment help can guide your structure and critique, and our postgraduate writing support helps with argument and APA 7 referencing before the 3 November draft.
