Learning Outcomes
On the completion of this paper students will be able to:
- Critically review current literature and practice of how nutrition influences wellness.
- Critically evaluate the nutritional factors that influence outcomes in wellness and the effectiveness of different treatment modalities/interventions for a range of lifestyle and long-term conditions.
- Incorporate and evaluate the concepts of client-focused problem planning, goal-setting, targets and time frames, and outcome measurement into the design of a nutritional programme.
- Evaluate ethical and cultural nutritional issues and interdisciplinary teamwork as they relate to wellness coaching and rehabilitation services and their delivery in Aotearoa / New Zealand.
- Critically evaluate models for change and practical tools to assess and promote readiness for behavioural change.
- Apply research, analysis, critique, problem-solving, implementation skills and understanding to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate nutritional health enhancement and lifestyle management programmes for clients.
Graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Health Sciences (Wellness and Rehabilitation) will be able to:
- recognise cultural differences and ethical issues, and consult and collaborate with other health professionals
- assess wellness and rehabilitation needs of clients and determine appropriate responses
- show evidence of advanced knowledge about wellness and rehabilitation
- apply acquired knowledge and skills in practical situations
- evaluate evidence in order to support a course of action.
Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Health Sciences (Wellness and Rehabilitation) will be able to:
- demonstrate mastery of complex concepts and theories in the field of wellness and rehabilitation and their application in solving practical problems
- prescribe, monitor and critically evaluate wellness and rehabilitative programmes using a client-centred approach within their discipline
- critique and reflect on personal specialty practices and take responsibility for clients’ needs
- show evidence of advanced knowledge about specialist areas of wellness and rehabilitation
- gather, evaluate and analyse information from a variety of sources
- demonstrate the capacity for critical thinking
Graduates of the Master of Applied Health Sciences (Wellness and Rehabilitation) will be able to:
- set and justify priorities, solve complex problems using credible evidence in novel environments, and organise and manage resources related to wellness and rehabilitation or performance
- design, carry out and communicate the results of significant research projects in the field of wellness and rehabilitation and relate the findings to the professional and research literature
- analyse and critique professional and research publications in wellness, rehabilitation and related subject areas, identify practical applications and relate findings to their own research
- apply their analytical and research capabilities to unfamiliar situations involving the application of wellness and rehabilitation practices
- research, integrate and apply advanced understanding of wellness and rehabilitation approaches, assessment, training and methodology
- demonstrate high levels of skill as a wellness and rehabilitation practitioner or in a research role in an organisation
- think critically and act responsibly when confronted with academic or professional challenges
Assessment Task
You are to investigate a nutritional issue which is impacting New Zealand’s population. You are to research the nutritional issues and investigate different strategies to reduce this issue
Your essay should:
- Show comprehensive understanding in the subject investigated.
- Illustrate a broad knowledge of surrounding issues.
- Show evidence of original thought.
- Present information in a clear, logical and structured manner, using correct grammar.
- Show ability to research the topic, with an in-depth review of literature.
- Be presented in APA format
The assignment is to be between 4000 – 6000 words.
