158.235 Assignment 1: Network Design and Configuration
In this assignment, you will be designing and configuring a network for a university environment, which has been allocated 148.23.0.0/16 IP address space.
- There are 2 faculties: Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Science.
- Each faculty has 4 subnets: staff subnet and student subnet.
A subnet is a logical subdivision of an IP network, which helps in dividing a larger network into two or more sub-networks. A subnet mask (255.255.255.0) defines the range of IP addresses that can be used within a network or subnet. It also separates an IP address (for example: 192.168.123.132) into two parts: network address (192.168.123.0) and host address (000.000.000.132), to help identify a host and the network to which it belongs to.

Part 1
- The following address space is available for your use when creating new subnets: 148.23.72.0/21
- Divide the allocated address space between faculty subnets such that each subnet is the minimum size needed for the number of hosts:
- Faculty of Arts (staff): 63
- Faculty of Arts (students): 511
- Faculty of Science (staff): 30
- Faculty of Science (students): 272
Be sure to avoid addressing conflicts with other existing subnets such as subnet linking routers (Fig. 1). You may use the labelled subnets outside this space when configuring router links, but not for the faculties themselves.
Part 2
- Construct the network topology in GNS3 simulator like the one below.
- Ensure that all the hostnames and network addresses are well labelled; and they are in the given address range.
- Use Cisco 3725 routers.

Part 3
- Configure all the routers using the assigned hostnames and IP address.
- Configure the routers to use RIP to automatically update the routing tables.
- You should be able to ping the Default_Gateway from Router02 and Router03.
[Hint: Use RIP version 2 with no auto-summary]
Part 4
- Setup Virtual PC (VPC) in each of the four subnets as shown above.
- Virtual PC provides lightweight PC environment to execute tools such as ping, and trace route.
- Each VPC should be able to ping the others.
You may use static addressing for the VPCs; DHCP is optional but not required (no extra marks are available).
Use the following checklist to ensure your network is configured correctly.

Router02 can ping Router01
Router03 can ping Router01
Router02 can ping Default_Gateway
Router03 can ping Default_Gateway
FA1 can ping Default_Gateway
FAS1 can ping Default_Gateway
FS1 can ping Default_Gateway
FSS1 can ping Default_Gateway
All VPCs can ping each other |
- For each of your routers, make sure to save your running configuration using the command
▪ write mem - For the VPCs use the below command to save the configurations to a file
▪ save - Finally save the GNS3 project, i.e., the topology (the *.gns3 file) together with the startup configs (the project-files folder and its contents)
Zip the GNS3 project folder directly (do not export the project) and submit it on Stream. Make sure your submission is complete and has all the necessary files to run the simulation. As a sanity check, download your submission from Stream and run it on General Lab VM.
