You are asked to read broadly about leadership and management theories that relate to the healthcare context. Critically analyse the main points raised in your reading and summarise these in a 1000-1500-word précis.

Your work will include 5 different theoretical positions and can draw on different disciplinary knowledge; for example, psychology. You should describe each very briefly, explain where the ideas originated from (e.g. business, psychology, nursing etc.) and identify the strengths and weaknesses of the theories and their application and usefulness in health care.

This assignment addresses course learning objectives 1 and 2

1. Recognise the key issues that arise in leading and managing in the health sector, including in relation to organisational culture and cultural safety.

Example: One of newly graduated nurse in our hospital in Sri Lanka, was struggling with medication errors during busy shifts on a medical ward. Recognising this, our clinical nurse manager, applied the Path-Goal Theory to support her. Our nurse manager clarified the goal of improving medication safety and removed barriers by coordinating with doctors to ensure clear and timely medication orders. She provided training and assigned a mentor to guide this new nurse, using a supportive leadership style to build confidence. manager also set achievable goals and acknowledged new nurse progress, motivating her through positive reinforcement. As a result, she performance improved significantly, and the ward experienced a reduction in medication errors.
