Glossary
Cultural safety practices: includes practices like mana enhancing and protecting practices. These practices are based on respect, showing care, empowerment and being uplifting, as well as working with the person and their whānau through their strengths, knowledge and resources. Cultural safety practices aim to restore the person’s sacredness. They focus on the experience of the tangata whai ora and whānau. The worker responds in a way that suits the tangata whai ora and their whānau by being mana enhancing and respectful of their values, beliefs and practices. The worker is able to reflect on their own biases and build a genuine partnership and seek feedback.
Mana enhancing practices: these are practices that uplift and restore mana, sacredness and dignity. They are respectful, honour strength-based approaches, work within the values, beliefs and practices of the tāngata whai ora and their whanau, work with the skills and knowledge of tāngata whai ora and their whanau and are based on building a caring relationship and manaakitanga.
Te Whare Tapa Whā model: the four pillars of taha tinana (physical wellbeing), taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing), taha whānau (family and social wellbeing) and taha hinengaro (mental wellbeing).
Tangata whai ora: a person seeking wellness.
Tāngata whai ora: people seeking wellness.

Task 1: The holistic needs of tāngata whai ora
Setting the scene
Provide a brief summary of your workplace and the roles and responsibilities you have within it. This will not be marked but is needed to provide the marker with an understanding of your health and wellbeing setting.
1a. Choose a tangata whai ora you work with and briefly describe them and their health and wellbeing situation.
In your description of the tangata whai ora, consider their:
- age, gender and ethnicity
- whānau situation
- main conditions impacting their health
- interests
1b. Complete the table below to describe four different holistic needs of the tangata whai ora, two met and two
Think about the following needs of the tangata whai ora:
- tinana (physical), whānau (family and social), hinengaro (emotional and mental), wairua (spiritual, religious)
- occupational (worker, interests, volunteer, whānau role)
- educational (learning needs), cultural, financial, taiao (environmental)
- their life stage.

Task 2: The impact of holistic needs on tāngata whai ora
Identify and name a holistic health model such as ‘Te Whare Tapa Whā’, ‘Fonofale’ or another holistic health model of your choice to help understand the impact of the holistic needs of the tangata whai ora you described in Task 1.
Use your choice of model to answer the following questions.
i. Describe how the model can be used to understand how at least two of the needs of the tāngata whai ora are connected (for example, emotional and physical).
ii. Describe the impact on the health and wellbeing of the tangata whai ora if these two holistic health needs are met.
iii. Describe the impact on the health and wellbeing of the tangata whai ora if these two holistic health needs continue not to be met.
Task 3: The impact of holistic needs on tāngata whai ora experiencing a change
Changes impact on people’s health and wellbeing. A change could be:
- needing end of life care
- a change in health or living situation
- getting care and treatment
- the loss of a loved one
- losing their job
- separation
The change could be temporary or permanent, a choice they are making, or out of their control.
Choose a tangata whai ora who is going through a change and describe a need and the impacts of the change.
i. Describe the change.
ii. Describe one need the tangata whai ora has around this change.
iii. Describe two impacts of the change situation on the health and wellbeing of this tangata whai ora.
In your answer relate the need to one of the following models.
- Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
- Model of change (Prochaska and DiClemente).
- Model of grief (Kubler Ross).
- Worden’s tasks of mourning.
