Assessment presentation format

Please note that there is a choice of how you present your response to the two assessment tasks.

1. You may provide a written response, or
2. You may submit a digital innovative response as an MP4 file. This can be PowerPoint slides with voice-over, explaining your unit directly to the camera or to a colleague. Submit this as an MP4 file.

If you choose to submit an MP4 file, your presentation should be approximately 12 minutes in length. Use the word count guidelines provided for each section as a guide to the length of each section of your presentation.

Background

While analysing (qualitative and quantitative) achievement data from your class, you notice some trends.

• Ākonga Māori and Pacific learners have significantly lower NCEA pass rates than others.
• Ākonga Māori and Pacific learners are not developing the skills in your subject area.
• Ākonga Māori and Pacific learners attend class only 50% of the time (while other ethnicities attend class 92% of the time), and when they are in class, they are not engaged in learning.

Task 1: Teaching strategies

1. Identify and explain at least three teaching strategies in your specialised learning area that have been proven effective in enhancing engagement and achievement for Māori and Pacific tamariki/rangatahi.
   (Word count guideline: 150 words)

2. Discuss how each of these strategies are culturally responsive and align with at least one of the following: Kaupapa Māori, Pacific values or National Educational Goals (NEGs).
   (Word count guideline: 200 words)
   (15 marks)
3. Select one of the strategies and develop an action plan for its implementation in a specific localised unit of work for NCEA (Levels 1–3).
   1. Include the curriculum area, subject, NCEA level, duration of the unit and any other relevant details.
   2. Outline step-by-step how you could implement the strategy into your teaching practice (including specific activities, materials, resources, methods of assessment, best practices for teaching and learning, classroom environment or community interaction, where appropriate).

Task 2: Evaluation and reflection

Evaluate the (potential or observed) impact of the applied strategy (from Task 1c) on ākonga Māori and Pacific learners’ engagement and achievement data. In your evaluation, you should:

• include a discussion of indicators of successful outcomes, supported by evidence from your own observations in classrooms and/or related literature
• reflect on how this assessment has informed your understanding of the importance of culturally responsive pedagogy.

Overall presentation and style

Marks will be awarded for overall presentation, including grammar, spelling, appropriate acknowledgements through in-text citations and references in APA (7th edition) style throughout the assessment. Include a full reference list at the end of the assessment.
