115212 Assignment 1
due : 26 mar 2024
Reflect on a leadership or follower role you have experienced or are currently undertaking.
This is a 2000-word (plus/minus 10%) individual assessment, requiring you to reflect on a specific leadership or followership challenge you currently face or one you have experienced in the past. Your reflection needs to be informed by scholarly leadership/followership literature, using APA 7th edition referencing.
It is worth 35% of your final mark.
- Reflect on a leadership or follower role you have experienced or are currently undertaking.
- To complete this task, you will need to:
1. Analyse the challenge. Why is this a challenge for you? If it is based on a past event, what happened? How did you feel? What do you want?
2. Provide a reflective analysis of the challenge. Use literature to gain insight into why things happened and what can be learned.
3. Discuss what you can apply in future. What can you do differently? What specific practices will help you to do better? Again, how does it relate to relevant literature? - Note: At least three required leadership readings from this course must be referenced and discussed in this assignment. Additional leadership related sources not provided in this course are also expected to be referenced in this assessment.
- Be sure to reference all work that is not your own as assessment go through Turnitin.
Purpose of Assignment 1
- This course is about collaboration, and how to become better at leadership and teamwork
- It wants to help you ‘do leadership and teamwork’ in new ways,
- The assignment is not just a discussion of leadership theory.
- It is a reflection: the lectures/ workshops/ readings give you theory that you can use to reflect on your own abilities/ experiences, and then plan new behaviour.
- We want to see that you can use the reflection process effectively.
How do I structure it?
You can come up with your own structure
- OR
Use the bullet points in the instructions:
- Intro… What’s it about? What’s the challenge and why have you chosen it?
- Section outlining nature of the challenge – how did you feel/ how did other people feel/ what feedback did you get?
- Section where you reflect on the challenge using leadership theories and concepts to understand why things happened the way they did, and what you can learn from this.
- Section where you discuss what you’ve learned, and what you can do differently in the future? Also consider what you have learned about yourself. What specific practices will help you to do better? What did you learn? What will you be doing differently next time to what you did in the past? What have you learned about yourself?
- Tie it up with a summary/ final thoughts.
Tone of reflective writing
- Personal (you can use I and We)
- Use active rather than passive (“I asked the team to. “.. rather than “The team was asked to…”)
- Avoid colloquialisms, idioms, informal language, slang, swearing – it is still a piece of academic writing!
- Try to use calm, reflective language rather than hyperbolic language.
