Aim
The aim of this assignment is to demonstrate your developing knowledge and understanding around mental health and addictions and the role of the nurse in mental health. This assignment will assess learning outcomes 1, 3 and 5.
Learning Outcome
1. Discuss the aetiology, neuropathology, and presentation of major mental illnesses and addictions and their impact on people (including Māori), family and whānau, at different life stages.
3. Discuss nursing assessments and analyse interventions to assist people who are experiencing an altered mental health or addiction status.
5. Discuss relevant legislation and analyse ethical issues related to mental health.
Task
In an academically written piece of work, you must address the following:
1. The patient/condition
Discuss the causation, neuropathology, and presentation of a chosen mental health problem (refer to the list below). Additionally, explain how this condition affects the physical, social and psychological well- being of the service user (SU) focusing on a specific life stage.
2. Nursing role and responsibilities
A. Discuss a suitable nursing assessment framework that nurses can employ to guide their practice. This framework should be tailored to the specific mental health problem chosen.
B. Examine in-depth two pertinent non-pharmacological nursing interventions that a nurse could implement in their clinical practice to provide support for the service user (SU) dealing with altered mental health. For each intervention, it is essential to include an evidence-based rationale.
3. Ethical and legal implications
C. Discuss a single ethical or legal implication that may arise for the service user (SU) experiencing the mental health problem.
D. Provide one real-world example where a nurse can take action to assist the service user in their recovery while addressing a legal and/or ethical challenge.”Note: Ensure all research literature and rationale is referenced and correctly as per accepted guidelines.
