Objective
To demonstrate students’ understanding of how well-defined research questions contribute to high-quality research and practice. It aims to develop students’ ability to critically evaluate the process of formulating research questions, highlight the importance of well-formulated questions in advancing research outcomes across various fields, and strengthen their skills in comparing how research questions shape both academic inquiry and real-world professional practice.
Conditions
- This assessment is an open-book activity, you can use your own course and review notes as well as offline or online resources, such as textbooks or online journals.
- You can always ask your online tutor if you need further explanation if the instructions are unclear.
- By completing and submitting an assessment you are authenticating that the work is original and does not violate plagiarism or copyright law. Authenticity is checked where any breaches of academic integrity are suspected. Please refer to the Student Handbook for further information.
Guidelines for Research Question Submission
- Ensure that the cover page includes full details of the article you have chosen (Assessment title, student’s name, supervisor’s name, date, and proposal title)
- Select relevant, recent research papers from reputable journals
- Identify the research hypothesis and research questions
- Provide an in-depth analysis of the research methodologies
- Explain the data collection process within the articles
- Summarise all the outcomes of the studies
- Identify research gaps within each paper
- Develop well-defined research questions based on the identified gaps
- Reflect on how clear, focused questions can enhance both academic inquiry and professional practice
Assessment Tasks
Task 1 (LO3): Papers Selection
Choose two recent research papers (in the past 3 years) from reputable, peer-reviewed journals. One paper should be focused on healthcare, and the other should be from a different academic or professional context (e.g., education, business, social sciences).
- Both papers must have been published within the last three years.
- Only use papers from established, peer-reviewed journals. Platforms such as ResearchGate and arXiv are not acceptable for citation.
- Provide full citations in APA 7th edition format for each paper.
Task 2 (LO3): Reading and Analysis
Thoroughly read both selected papers to understand the research topic, methodology, and key findings.
- Provide an overview of the research topic, the methodology used (e.g., survey, case study, experiment), and summarise the key findings presented by the authors.
Task 3 (LO3): Identifying Research Gaps
Examine the limitations of each paper or other areas where the authors acknowledge the need for further research.
- Identify unanswered questions or unresolved challenges within the research area.
- Consider whether the methodology could be extended to explore new aspects of the problem.
- Reflect on limitations regarding the generalisability of the findings due to specific contexts or technologies used.
Task 4 (LO3): Formulating Research Questions
Based on the identified research gaps, create two well-formulated research questions for each paper. Ensure the questions are:
- Specific: Focused on a narrow and clear aspect of the broader research topic.
- Feasible: Researchable within the time, resource, and methodological constraints.
- Significant: Capable of contributing valuable knowledge to the field.
Task 5 (LO3): Critical Reflection
For each selected paper:
- Explain how having a well-defined, focused research question can improve the effectiveness of research or professional practice.
- Discuss the potential negative consequences of poorly formulated research questions in each respective context.
