Expectations for Developing a Written Academic Discussion

  • Naming: Include your name, student number, and assignment title on the first page of your essay.
  • Word Count: Remember to state the word count at the end of your essay. Stay as close to the number that has been allocated (2200 +/- 10%). Assignments that exceed the word count will not be marked beyond the allocated number.
  • Structure: Your essay should have an introduction, main body, and conclusion. Headings are acceptable to use if they help you with the structure and flow, but use sparingly.
  • Marking Criteria: It is a good idea to review the marking criteria before you start your essay and again when finished. Ask yourself these questions:
    • Have I met the criteria for a pass?
    • Where does my essay sit within the marking grid?
  • Referencing: Use APA 7 referencing style in-text and in your reference list. The library has resources available to help you with this; visit: https://canvas.aut.ac.nz/courses/7624/pages/referencing-guides

Research and Literature Requirements

For this essay to produce a well-informed discussion and demonstrate evidence of reading, you must draw on eight references (no more and no less) ranging between 2015 and 2025. If you are using website sources, do so sparingly and ensure they are appropriate (refer to essay prep lecture and Library web pages for further guidance on this).

It is good academic writing practice to provide relevant examples. Examples of experiences provided in the research-based articles can be used to support your discussion.

Poster Presentation Instructions (Alternative Option)

As an alternative to producing a written assignment, you may prefer to present your work as a poster and accompany it with a video discussion and summary.

  • Poster: Create an academic-style poster (download a free template online). Please refer to Canvas’s Assessment 2 Preparation page for further help with posters. Alongside your poster and recording, upload a 1000-word summary of your poster content and a list of the references used. This reference list must be formatted using APA 7 referencing style.
  • Note: An academic poster is typically used to communicate research findings. Because your assessment is a theoretical discussion, some research poster template sections are not relevant. Please refer to ‘Assessment 2 Preparation’ in Canvas for suggested sections.
  • Panopto Recording: Present a 5-minute verbal video-recorded discussion in which you expand on and synthesise the information identified in your poster. Submit both the Poster, Summary, References, and the Panopto recording in Canvas.

Submission Instructions

  • Submit your assessment via Turnitin as a word document (not pdf).
  • Panopto video recording: For instructions on how to submit a recorded discussion via Panopto, please refer to Student video submission: 101 Canvas Help.

Late Submission and Penalty

5-day late submission applies with a grade penalty.
