Assignment topic:
- Write a case review of a transport you have completed recently. This should be a retrieval where problem solving has been required. The following areas should be addressed:
- Summary of patient’s history and presenting complaint/injuries
- Outline pre-flight management of the patient prior to the transport team arrival at the referring hospital
- On your arrival outline your assessment and management of the patient
- Discuss preparation to ensure a safe transport. This should include but not be limited to:
- Time of transport
- Type of aircraft used and why
- Length of transport
- Any altitude restriction and why
- Outline weather conditions during the transport
- Location
- Acuity of patient
- Equipment required
- Crew Resource Management/human factors
- Discuss any intervention/s during the flight providing rationale as to why that intervention/s has been required. You must present and demonstrate your understanding of two stressors of flight that can impact patient care/management relevant to your case study; one of these must be Boyles law. Discuss the importance of these concepts using patient examples from your aeromedical clinical practice.

Word count guidelines:
For this assignment where a word count has been specified, word counts must be adhered to. In-text citations are included in the final word count. Tables, figures and reference lists are not counted. In the case of submitted work that exceeds the specified word count, leeway will be given where the excess word count does not exceed 10% of the specified word count. Any material thereafter will not be marked (see the example given below).

A guide to avoid common writing errors:
- Please have someone else read your essays before submission – they do not need to be a medical professional, but it is incredibly difficult for a marker to acknowledge your understanding when we cannot get through all the grammar and spelling errors.
- Read it aloud to yourself to ensure it makes sense and there are appropriate commas and full stops. If you are turning blue trying to finish a sentence or paragraph – it is too long.
- Putting your name on the paper – please use only your ID number in the top left header and on the cover page. If your essay is given to another lecturer to mark or is printed, we want to maintain your anonymity.
- Page numbers. These are needed for the same reason as above, if they are printed and become messed up, we can correct this easily. Top right-hand corner of every page.
- Word counts. If you are going to state these, please make sure they are accurate.
- Use spell check. This will tidy up the whole appearance of your essay, and of course, ensure your spelling is correct.
- 5 line spacing for the body of the text but double line spacing for the reference list.
- A bibliography is not the same as a reference list (APA uses a reference list).
- Ensure you have volume, issue (where appropriate) and page numbers for your journal articles.

- If you wish to add emphasis to a word, do not use speech marks. If you use speech marks, this means it is a direct quote, and it must then be referenced as such (with page number/s).
- If multiple references support the same point you have made, all of the references go inside ONE set of brackets, and each reference is only separated by a semi-colon; ensure the references are ordered alphabetically inside the brackets, as they would appear in your reference list.
- Ensure you know the correct place to use and (outside of brackets) / & (inside brackets).
- It seems strange, BUT where there are three or more authors inside brackets, there needs to be a comma after the second author and before the ampersand (&) for example: (Gordon, Davey, & Williams, 2015).
- Three or less authors must have all three last names written out each time you cite them.
- If you state something ‘will’ or ‘is’, or if you give facts and figures, it must be referenced.
- Beware of using references that are over 10 years old. Medical advances are always occurring so ensure you are using the most up-to-date knowledge.
- A conclusion is a succinct summary of the findings you have already discussed – Please do not introduce new material here.

- If you are going to use a referencing system like EndNote (or equivalent), PLEASE ensure you check your references and reference list before submission. You need to actually set these tools up to APA 7th Otherwise, the programme’s default citation won’t make it 7th edition and will leave out crucial bits. Also, don’t let EndNote just place your references at the end of the essay – type these out individually otherwise, we can’t mark or comment on any of the references as it comes out as one block of text.
- From this level and onwards, when you are discussing clinical topics (our bread and butter) it is important to find references that agree and/or disagree with the statements you are making. This will show depth of your research, and not that you have believed the first thing you read when the study only had one person in it.
- If an abbreviation is used, it should be explained in the first instance, after that it is fine just to use the abbreviation eg. Chronic Obstructive Respiratory Disease (CORD).
- A sentence should not begin with an abbreviation.
- Poor sentence structure is quite common – read these out loud to see if they make sense.
- Inaccurate punctuation in general, specifically incorrect use of semi-colons and colons.
- Numbers under ten need to be written as words and not numbers.
- Poor word choice. Using extended vocabulary can either work excellently when appropriate but when incorrect, it demonstrates a lack of understanding of not only the word but also the context it is used in.
- Shortened forms should not be used (shouldn’t, can’t ).
- No requirement to indent each first line of a paragraph.
- Always have a cover page, include a declaration of your own work on this page.
- Ensure the entire essay is in the same font.
- Stick to the word count – if you are under, it typically means the essay has been poorly researched!
- Always refer to the marking grid to ensure you have the content we are looking for.
- The first paragraph should introduce the reader to the topic and outline what you will be talking about.

The final grade will be a composite of the grades of the two assessments and are weighted as follows:

As an example, if you receive 80% in the multiple-choice question examination and you get a B for your essay, you have passed both assessments and will have successfully met the requirements of the course.
Your final grade will be a B+ (80% in the MCQ contributes 32% to your final grade) (80% of the possible 40% weighting is 32%).
The B grade for the essay contributes 43.5% (the B grade range is 70-74.5%, the midpoint of which is 72.5%. 72.5% of the possible 60% for the essay is 43.5%).
Your total grade is 32% + 43.5% = 75.5%, which sits in the B+ range.
