- Unique and authentic taste of the Sri Lankan coffee and tea. Adding of Sri Lankan spices such Ceylon cinnamon and ginger flavours to the tea will give more authenticity to the taste.
- Sri Lankan flavours through different sweet threats along with tea and coffee. It is hard to find Sri Lankan sweets in New Zealand cafes and that will attract more customers.
- Plantation to cup concept by sourcing the tea and coffee directly from Sri Lankan plantations. This will incur a cost, but the value which giving to the taste is magnificent.
- Storytelling and heritage café: showcase the uniqueness through the architecture of the café, decorations in the front area and arrange the menu with Sri Lankan artwork. Playing a video of the Sri Lankan plantations with a calming Sri Lankan music will help to bridge the Rotorua with the heritage of Sri Lankan rich coffee and tea culture.
Reasons to attract customers to Ceylon Touch
In Rotorua, in generally most of the cafes focusing on making common coffees like Mocha, latte, cappuccinos etc and only basic tea options. If want to enjoy pastries, it is always western bakery items such as muffins & croissants. But Ceylon Touch going to present a unique taste to the Rotorua people. Sri Lankan Arabica coffee is rare to find in New Zealand. That taste is unique. Ceylon tea has variety of flavours which is authentic. Competitor Analysis
1. Direct competitors
Direct competitors are the cafes and tea houses in Rotorua as they are also targeting the same customer group who like to drink coffee, tea or café food.
Below are the few of the cafes which will be a direct competitor for the business as per my research.
- Ngongotaha Paradise Valley Snack Café
This café normally opens at 6 am to 5 pm in the address of 467, paradise valley road, Rotorua (Paradise Valley , 2025).
Strength: They have large outdoor tables, two grass area inside the park which gives enough space for huge number of customers. They also provide range of snacks such as sandwiches, pies, muffins and ice cream along with coffee hot and cold beverages. They are already stable business with a good customer base. There are also positive mentions of the cafe providing a place to buy animal food and the opportunity to have a picnic.
Weakness: No unique product. There are lots of other cafes around Rotorua.
- Café Dynasti
This café normally opens at 7 am to 3 pm on Monday to Friday and on Saturdays 8 am to 3 pm in the address of 125 A, Ngongotaha road, Rotorua, 3015 (Cafe Dynasti, 2025)
Strength: Main strength of the business is the menu which was created using the locally soured ingredients.
Weakness: Limited open hours and only working 6 days a week. Saturday opens at 8 am which will limit the attraction of customers who came for the morning walk early in the morning.
- Market kitchen café (Skyline)
This café opens 7 days a week. Monday to Thursday: 9am to 5 pm, Friday: 9 am to 6pm, Saturday: 9am to 8 pm, Sunday 9 am to 6 pm (MKarket Kitchen Cafe Rotorua, 2025).
Strength: Selection of international and local cuisine, including gourmet pies, bakery treats, pizzas, fish and chips, deli selections, ice cream, and exceptional coffee. Breathtaking views over Rotorua.
Weakness: There is often a longer waiting time due to the high volume of visitors to the café. Food preparation can be delayed as the menu offers a wide variety of options. The quality of
the food is sometimes lacking, as many items are freezer foods that are poorly microwaved before serving. Pricing tends to be higher, largely because of the café’s scenic views.
- There will be also other Franchise coffee shops which already have strong brand recognition and in convenient locations that will be also a big competition for the business.
2. Indirect Competitors
Not the cafes but also other tourist attraction points in Rotorua which highlight the Maori cultural dining experience.
Other bakeries and dessert shops which are not paired with the unique beverages.
Competitive Gap for Ceylon Touch
It can see a big opportunity for Ceylon touch as Sri Lankan Heritage café is an untapped niche. In Rotorua there is not any existing café which focuses on authentic Sri Lankan tea, coffee and sweets.
In the business we are going to combine the product with the experience. Our competitors sell coffee or food, but none of them combine art, storytelling with the unique food experience which immerse customers in another culture.
The location Rotorua is a tourist destination. The business can attract locals for daily coffee and tea while tourist for unique cultural experience.
Issue for Ceylon Touch is the location. As the café is near the Paradise valley Zoo, it is a rural area for sourcing of ingredients. To continue supply of customer demand, it may require storing raw materials and it will incur a cost as we need to supply most of the items from Sri Lanka.
Competitive Advantage
Exclusive unique product offering with wide variety of Ceylon tea, coffee and Sri Lankan sweets which are not available anywhere in Rotorua.
Outstanding experience with cultural storytelling which inspired by heritage plantation artwork and the menu that shares a story of Sri Lankan culture.
Directly sourced superior quality coffee beans and tea directly from Sri Lanka to keep the authenticity.
Destination café to attract tourist by showcasing unique Sri Lankan culture.
Another revenue stream by diversification: selling packaged teas, coffee and Sri Lankan sweets to take home and gifting.
